The WGSE's volunteer program is open to all students. The volunteer program is designed to acquaint participants with the mission and work of the WGSE and its programs, as well as the resources available on campus and in the community, with the goal of spreading this knowledge to others. The program provides individuals with the opportunity to be a social activist, as well as to engage in networking within the UCSB and WGSE communities.

As part of the volunteer program, you will work with the WGSE in a variety of ways including working alongside programmers as they plan their events, advertising WGSE events in the UCSB community, and other administrative work necessary for WGSE's programs. The minimum expected commitment is 3 hours a week, including weekly group meetings. However the volunteer program is open to varying degrees of involvement above and beyond this expectation.

Program Benefits

Volunteering can have both personal and professional benefits, including the opportunity to be a part of social activism on campus, connect with members of the WGSE community, build your skills and resume, and receive a letter of recommendation for positive volunteer involvement. You will have the opportunity to work alongside WGSE's programmers on issues you are interested in and will be able to shape WGSE's events. Additionally, many paid WGSE student staff begin as volunteers before being hired so this is a great way to get your foot in the door and begin getting involved with the department.

Program Expectations

1. Attend volunteer training and associated workshops
2. Attend biweekly volunteer meetings
3. Assist with 3-5 events and 2 tabling events per quarter
4. Meet with Volunteer Coordinator at the end of each quarter for a Quarterly Evaluation & Check-In

Brooke Blade

Hi there! My name is Brook Blade (she/her), and I am a third year transfer student from Orange County who is studying sociology. I am currently learning how to crochet and I love to go on walks down by the beach! I wanted to get involved with the Women’s Center because I want to be able to support my community and learn more about people’s stories. I am fascinated with group culture and enjoy how feminism brings people together. The Women’s Center is so much more than stickers and buttons, it is a group of people who value human rights and show that through staying informed and sharing that knowledge with others.

Vanessa Carmona Marquez

I really enjoy helping others in all sorts of ways and I am excited to help people by volunteering at the women center.

Elise Mori

Hello, my name is Elise Mori (she/her), and I am a first-year pre-biology major on the pre-med track. I am from Honolulu, Hawaii, and Manhattan Beach, California, so UCSB is the perfect place for me. I enjoy swimming, going to the beach/pool, finding cute coffee shops, and just being with loved ones. I am involved with the Women’s Center because my dream career is to be an Obstetrician-Gynecologist, and empowering women has always been a priority for me. I am so excited to see what the future holds, and I can’t wait to meet so many amazing women.
